We Can Register your Business Name in Australia for $99

A professional accountant, such as Thornton & Associates, can not only instantly register your business name and kick start your new business, but they can help you avoid common pitfalls during business start-up and provide extra options that you may not be aware of. This can sometimes end up saving you lots of time, money and headaches in the long run.

But registering a business name is only the first step. While starting a business in Australia can be an exciting and financially rewarding prospect, the conventional wisdom around new business structures can vary wildly, with good advice ranging from how to get your first customer to poor advice around setting up unnecessarily complex corporate structures.

In reality, however, the best bet you can make is to just jump in and start! In most cases, Thornton & Associates recommends the simplest business structure: a sole trader with an Australian business name. If your needs differ from this due to other special circumstances, a Thornton & Associates accountant can advise over the phone or email the best business structure for you.

We can help you register a business name with ASIC instantly for $99 and kick start your business journey with some helpful advice to get you on your way.

What you need to know when registering for GST

Your business must register for GST in Australia when your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more.

Usually, if you do more than $75,000 in sales, or expect to do more than $75,000 in the year, you will have to register for GST. The only exception to this general rule is if you provide taxi or limousine services to passengers, including if you drive for Uber, Lyft or Didi.

When you register for GST, you are required to prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements to the Tax Office, and you must charge 10% GST to your customers. This involves setting up your invoices and receipts to correctly record the GST charges.

Additionally, you will need to setup your accounting systems to correctly record how must GST you have charged customers.

Once you’re GST registered, you will be able to received a refund for GST you have paid on goods and services you have purchased for use in your business. The rules for claiming GST credits to offset the GST you must pay to the tax office are sometimes complicated, but a Registered Tax Agent such as Thornton & Associates can help you get the most out of your GST input tax credits.

What to do if your BAS is Late or Overdue

If you are a business owner and you make $75,000 or more in Australia, you must submit regular Business Activity Statements (BAS).

If you fall behind in lodging BAS statements, you could end up with debts to the Australian Tax Office (ATO). In some cases, if you get in touch with a professional accountant, such as Thornton & Associates, your business accountant can negotiate with the Tax Office on your behalf to organise a payment plan that works within your cash flow constraints.

If the Tax Office has contacted you about late BAS lodgments, or you are concerned about your BAS being overdue – contact Thornton & Associates today.
